“Unity is our global issue today.
By immersing audiences in the culture of Austronesian seafaring tribe, we can revisit our roots, rediscover modern society, reconnect with nature and remember what it means to be human.” — Jan Stanlav

PERCAKAPAN PERAHU

Exhibition: (a.k.a Tales of The Boat)

Jan invokes the sea as a powerful metaphor for unity, representing both a global connector and the lifeblood of Indonesia as an archipelagic nation. The sea’s boundless spirit mirrors the enduring human migrations that shaped Southeast Asia, weaving cultures and histories together. To return to the sea is to revisit this shared past, offering a profound point of reflection on the essence of unity and interconnectedness.

The STORIES

“The Austronesian language family, originating in Taiwan, spans nearly one-third of the globe, from Madagascar to the islands of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, reaching as far as Indonesia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. The Austronesian people, often referred to as “sea people” for their remarkable seafaring abilities, navigated vast oceans and settled in some of the most remote regions of the world.

Percakapan Perahu draws inspiration from the Austronesians — our ancestors — whose migrations across the
ocean serve as a powerful reminder of our shared history. The sea, a unifying force, is especially significant for
Indonesia, an archipelago whose identity is deeply intertwined with the waters that connect its islands. In line with Opus 1 Foundation’s Open Call 2024 theme, Unity, we aim to inspire and remind people that we are bound together by the sea.”

A boat serves as a metaphor for the interconnectedness of humanity across the world.
